Adrift in the Heartland

Adrift in the Heartland is the story of two women who weather the initial clash of their Palestinian- and African-American identities to share an intimate friendship.

Starring: Janie Khoury and Ida Smith with Aman Haque, Henry McMullen and Leah Foulke.  Director of Photography Tomomi Itaya.  Edited by Brian McHenry.  Music by D. Bayne.  Written and Directed by Brigid Maher.

Based on improvisations by Janie Khoury, Ida Smith, Henry McMullen, Marshal Carter, Leah Foulke and Farozan Islam.

"The dialogue, written by director Brigid Maher based on the actors' improvisations, is exquisitely balanced: both women have to overcome their biases, and when they argue with their mates, each party contributes to the miscommunication. In some scenes, such as the opening, Maher presents the dialogue without showing the speakers, giving their words an evocativeness that's rare in conventional narrative."
